Jurong West is a neighbourhood in Singapore, and is west of its counterpart Jurong East, covering a much larger area of some 9.90 square kilometres with slightly more than half used for residential purposes and HDB housing, including the Jurong West Extension. It is part of the larger town of Jurong , having the second largest resident population in Singapore.

History
In the 1950s, Jurong West was mainly dominated by swamps with low hills covered by shrubs and a thick jungle. It was developed into an industrial estate in the 1960s, supported by low-cost housing. Amenities such as government dispensaries, a private hospital, creches, hawker centres and banks were built in the 1970s during efforts to develop Singapore economically.Up to the late 1980s, only part of the Jurong West housing estate had been developed, specifically the area between Boon Lay estate and Jurong East. In the early 1990s, a new section of Pioneer Road North was built to connect the present Jurong West Extension to Upper Jurong Road. This signalled the start of the development of Jurong West Extension. Today, the area is also served by the PIE which was extended to Tuas from Corporation Road, also in the early 1990s.

Present
Located next to the Jurong Industrial Estate, Jurong West is housed to many public and workers’ housing. The influx of foreign workers and foreign expatriates in the region has been a concern among the residents in the area. Many residents are unhappy that the estate has been littered and crime rates in Jurong West is believed to be higher than other locations.Jurong West currently has 2 extension districts in addition to Pioneer, Nanyang and Hong Kah. They are located in Jalan Bahar and east of Boon Lay Way. Many HDB apartments remain unsold in this area due to the close proximity to the industrial estate. The long awaited Light Rail projected has not been confirmed, much to the dismay of residents. However, the Pioneer and Nanyang districts are well connected to the city via buses.
